Hello Miami Art Week 2023

We are thrilled to announce that our big Preview of Gimme Shelter during Miami Art Week 2023 was a tremendous success. On Monday, December 4, 2023, the gathering drew prestigious art collectors and aficionados to the Historic Hampton House, and reawakened the historical building to a new generation of supporters.

Gimme Shelter featured 25 artists, Co-curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody, Laura Dvorkin, Zoe Lukov, and Maynard Monrow. Artists include Derrick Adams, Terry Adkins, Lisa Anne Auerbach, Sadie Barnette, Sanford Biggers, Zoe Buckman, Nick Cave, Charles Gaines, Lauren Halsey, Amanda Ross-Ho, Stefani Jemison, Bronwyn Katz, Maia Ruth Lee, Kandy G Lopez, Patrick Martinez, Jared McGriff, Christopher Myers, Howardena Pindell, Paul Pfeiffer, Bony Ramirez, Devin Reynolds, Lorna Simpson, Warith Taha, Naama Tsabar, Fulton Leroy Washington, and Carrie Mae Weems. Media attention ran deep with stories running in The New York Times to Forbes magazine about this special gathering and purpose-driven collection taking place during a coveted week in Miami.

The opening was followed by further important conversations that week, starting with “Our House, Your Voice: Salon Series” which drew influential figures to our ballroom to further delve into social justice issues merged within the art space, led by thought leaders in this field.

Talks included “The Art of Collecting….What's Next?” with Larry Ossei-Mensah (Independent curator and co-founder of ARTNOIR), Everette Taylor (CEO of Kickstarter), Marielle Plaisir (Miami-based artist), and moderater Lise Ragbir (Independent writer and co-founder of VERGE). The discussion? Major shifts are reverberating across the art world as the market continues to respond to the rise of mega-galleries and a new generation collector class broadening commercial art appeal within popular culture. In response some individuals are forming sustainable ecosystems with other artists and galleries that promote equity for a new class of collectors. The conversation sought to uncover the ways in which artists and individuals are working together to build equity in the art market.

In homage to our own Green Book hotel history, we invited the Author and award-winning broadcaster, Alvin I Hall, who took audiences through America’s racial past, with the legendary Green Book in conversation with longtime friend, Derrick Adams. Published from 1936 to 1966, the Green Book was initially a travel guide for Black visitors to New York City, informing them where they could safely eat and sleep without fear or racial harassment. The book grew to list Black-friendly businesses in every state. In 2019, Hall and social activist and friend, Janée Woods, drove from Detroit to New Orleans, meeting people while reenacting a journey many Black Americans took during the Jim Crow era. In 2018, Derrick Adams presented his installation, Sanctuary, at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book. This discussion traced the critically important work of Alvin Hall and the artistic practice of Derrick Adams with moderator Folasade Ologundudu guiding the discussion.

And just like that, to wrap up the big week, we hosted a final event that drew more crowds yet again. Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra presented a collection of works in homage to icons of social justice, from Tupac to Martin Luther Kind Jr, the paintings are a burst of color in his signature style. Referred to as simply KOBRA, the artist celebrated his Green Book Project Reveal: BRIDGES OVER WALLS.

“The Historic Hampton House is a treasure in this community,” says Jacqui B. Colyer, Executive Director of The Historic Hampton House. “It’s a treasure because it speaks of a time when the African-American community was resilient, when the community figured out a way to make the best of a situation that it was stuck in”.

Today, the Historic Hampton House continues to celebrate this resilience with a bevy of programming that holds space for these types of conversations, further bridging the divide, and creating equity for all. Thank you to all of our new friends for supporting this event in keeping this legacy alive.
